چکیده

We consider reaction-diffusion systems on the infinite line that exhibit a family of spectrally stable spatially periodic wave trains u0(kx− ωt; k) that are parameterized by the wave number k. We prove stable diffusive mixing of the asymptotic states u0(kx + φ±; k) as x → ±∞ with different phases φ− 6= φ+ at infinity for solutions that initially converge to these states as x → ±∞. The proof is based on Bloch wave analysis, renormalization theory, and a rigorous decomposition of the perturbations of these wave solutions into a phase mode, which shows diffusive behavior, and an exponentially damped remainder. Depending on the dispersion relation, the asymptotic states mix linearly with a Gaussian profile at lowest order or with a nonsymmetric non-Gaussian profile given by Burgers equation, which is the amplitude equation of the diffusive modes in the case of a nontrivial dispersion relation.

Lattice differential equations embedded into reaction-diffusion systems

We show that lattice dynamical systems naturally arise on infinite-dimensional invariant manifolds of reaction-diffusion equations with spatially periodic diffusive fluxes. The result connects wave pinning phenomena in lattice differential equations and in reaction-diffusion equations in inhomogeneous media. The proof is based on a careful singular perturbation analysis of the linear part, wher...

Analysis of Plane Waves in Anisotropic Magneto-Piezothermoelastic Diffusive Body with Fractional Order Derivative

In this paper the propagation of harmonic plane waves in a homogeneous anisotropic magneto-piezothermoelastic diffusive body with fractional order derivative is studied. The governing equations for a homogeneous transversely isotropic body in the context of the theory of thermoelasticity with diffusion given by Sherief et al. [1] are considered as a special case. It is found that three types of...

Instabilities of Wave Trains and Turing Patterns in Large Domains

We classify generic instabilities of wave trains in reaction-diffusion systems on the real line as the wavenumber and system parameters are varied. We find three types of robust instabilities: Hopf with nonzero modulational wavenumber, sideband, and spatio-temporal period-doubling. Near a fold, the only other robust instability mechanism, we show that all wave trains are necessarily unstable. W...

The dynamics of modulated wave trains

We investigate the dynamics of weakly-modulated nonlinear wave trains. For reaction-diffusion systems and for the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation, we establish rigorously that slowly varying modulations of wave trains are well approximated by solutions to the Burgers equation over the natural time scale. In addition to the validity of the Burgers equation, we show that the viscous shock profil...
